Gardening

Off to MSG shortly for the Trey /Tom Petty show and later this week will be hitting the Bruce Springsteen show their with his Seeger Sessions Band - pulled up a ridiculous seat so had to buy it. From what I've heard Bruce has like 20 twenty playing on stage with him - though I think that's only a few more then are actually in the E Street Band. It'll be my first time seeing The Boss and though it's not going to be a classic three hour marathon show of the hits still extremely excited about it - I really dig the new album.

Here's a couple of Bruuuuuuuuuce shows off the current tour....

Pitchfork's 100 Awesome Music Videos

Miss those days of watching music videos all afternoon?? Well seems like the people at Pitchfork do too, so they've compiled a list of "100 Awesome Music Videos" - with videos from YouTube (does that site every stop giving us hours of endless entertainment?). There is no real criteria to how they made their selections, but here's the process in their words...

"Sharing 100 of our favorite music videos; simply, dozens of clips that, for various reasons (because they're so good, because they're so bad, because they feature the Jacksons imagining themselves as gigantic golden gods sprinkling gold dust on humanity), we enjoy watching and hope you'll enjoy as well."

So head on over their and watch everything from the Chicago Bears "Superbowl Shuffle" to The Decemberists "16 Miltary Wives" to Nas "One Mic".

More 'Roo

Was just reading this about MMJ's late-night set from Friday night from Billboard's coverage....

Bonnaroo favorites My Morning Jacket ushered in the midnight hour with squalls of Crazy Horse-worthy fury. The quintet delivered a more than three-hour set that sported a guest turn from friend and singer Andrew Bird for an epic take on another classic rock moment, "It Makes No Difference" by the Band. MMJ recently recorded the track for an upcoming Band tribute album at singer/drummer Levon Helm's barn studio in Woodstock, N.Y.

While yes I'm looking forward to downloading the set, I think I was more into the fact that they recorded a track for a tribute album for The Band. I need some more info on that, so if anyone has any please pass it along.

Watchin' The 'Roo Part 3

Haven't gotten a chance to watch anything since Friday, but currently really enjoying the Phil & Friends set. John Scofield is simply amazing. Wasn't sure how he was going to fit in with this band, but he's doing a great job so far. Definitely getting me even more psyched for the shows I'm seeing in a couple of weeks.

Even more exciting is the debut of G.R.A.B. which is on after the Phil set. Kudos to the Superfly people for keeping this top secret - their performace was originally billed as the "Late Night Super Jam". Can't wait to check it out!!!

Watchin' The 'Roo - Part 2

So I've spent the majority of my afternoon glued to my computer screen. I saw bits and pieces of Steel Pulse from what I saw I enjoyed - nothing groundbreaking, but some solid reggae. Next up was Devendra Banhart who dubbed his band the Tennessee Cops for the day. First time hearing him live and thoroughly impressed. Devendra and his band of long haired friends looks liked they just stepped out of Haight-Ashbury circa 1966. If you haven't heard his music I highly recommend picking up Cripple Crow - it's a mix of psychedelic-rock/freak folk and soul. Take a listen to "I Feel Just Like A Child". Oysterhead was up next and simply brought it for their entire 2 hour set. I remember seeing them back in 2001 and just wasn't that blow away by it. After seeing their set today I'm ready to go on tour with them when they hit the road later this year - at least that's the rumor. I don't think I've seen Trey play that inspired in a long time - he was locked in with Les and Stewart. They ran through just about all of The Grand Pecking Order and really jammed out the songs. When the downloads start rolling in next week I strongly think everyone should grab it, it's going to be one the sets that everyone will be talking about when they return.

Right now watching Bright Eyes - who's brought out Gillian Welch, David Rawling and the lead singer of the Super Furry Animals to play with him so far. More on his set later.

Live Blogging From The 'Roo

Head on over to Nashville Is Talking where Brittney Gilbert has been blogging about her Bonnaroo experience. Just happened to be doing some Google searching and stubble upon it - it's been an interesting read so far, so check it out.

Watchin' The 'Roo

Don't know how much of the Bonnaroo live webcast I'll be able to see after today - hopefully I'll have some time though. I did watch Ben Folds earlier which I enjoyed - pretty much his standard set. The audience seemed to be digging it and his cover of Dr. Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit" is truly brilliant. It was great seeing all those people singing-a-long to a gansta rap song that he's turned into a ballad. Download of version of it here.

Looking forward to Devendra Banhart, Oysterhead and Bright Eyes later on tonight. Probably skip on watching Tom Petty since I'll be seeing him next week.

Head here for the webcast. Enjoy!!

Late Night With Ryan Adams and More

Ryans Adams will be playing a late night show at Bowery Ballroom next Friday, June 23rd - technically it'll be Saturday morning since doors open at 12:30 A.M. Tickets are $20 and are on-sale now via TicketWeb.

Ryan & The Cardinals will be playing earlier in the night uptown at the benefit show for Arthur Lee of Love at the Beacon Theater that also features Robert Plant, Yo La Tengo, Nil Lofgren, Ian Hunter, Flashy Python and The Body Snatchers (the indie-folk side project of Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) and others. Buy tickets here.

Ryan has also just announced a show next month - July, 20th - at the Starland Ballroom. Tickets for that go on sale this Saturday via Ticketmaster.

Flashy Python and The Body Snatchers will be playing Joe's Pub this coming Wednesday. Get your tickets here, for that show.

Triple Play

So bought a ticket for the triple bill of Stevie Nicks, Trey & Tom Petty for their show next week at the Garden. Yeah it was a bit pricey, but kind hard to pass up on. My ticket is in section 226 - so not bad for deciding to go less then a week before the show. Trey loves playing at MSG and have only heard great things about Petty's live shows - from the looks of the setlists he pretty much just plays the hits.

Here's a couple of Petty shows off of this tour...

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - 2006-06-09 - Verizon Wireless Amphitheater - Charlotte, NC

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - 2006-06-10 - Nissan Pavilion - Bristow, Va

$1 Beer & The Arctic Monkeys

Heading out to see a friend that's back in town from Cali for $1 beers at Lincoln Park Grill then will be heading over to Roseland for Arctic Monkeys show. I guess it might be passe to see them now, but looking forward to checking them out. I can't remember a band in recent memory that went from playing Mercury Lounge to Roseland (with a few other stops in between) in such a short amount of time.

Here they are doing "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" - for some European television show....

moe. announces nye plans

While I was rockin' it at WSP tonight, from the looks of the setlist moe. was throwing down in Central Park. While it's only mid-June they also announced that they'd be ringing in the new year here in New York City at Radio City Music Hall. They haven't played a New Year's show in NYC since 1996 at the long deceased club Tramps - which I was actually at, so mark you calanders now for it.

Tonight!

Modern Times

The new Bob Dylan album Modern Times is set to hit streets on August 29th. Here's a little preview of it from Rolling Stone....

Bob Dylan's new album, Modern Times, is due out on August 29th. Times, which Dylan produced himself, mixes elements of 2001’s Love and Theft – blues variations (think “Cry A While”) and whimsical ballads (think “Floater”) – with the darker, swampier vibe of the Daniel Lanois-produced classics Time Out of Mind and Oh Mercy. Only Dylan’s current touring band plays on the new one: ringing in our ears was the bone-chilling vamp “Ain’t Talkin’”, which may be Dylan’s most powerful album-closing epic ever. Other song titles include “Thunder On the Mountain,” “Spirit on the Water,” “Workingman’s Blues,” “When the Deal Goes Down” and “Neddy Moore.” Before the release of Modern Times, Dylan will be doing another summer tour of minor league ballparks, with Merle Haggard opening.

This Is The End...

Head on over to My Blog Is Poop for what Bob is threatening to be his last post ever on there. So click on the link and show him some love for all the hard work and funny stuff he's come up with over the last couple of years. I was holding out for one more "Ask Bob", but good work - it's been a great run!

Droppin' Some Knowledge

If you were a fan of the late, great OM Trio then check out keyboardist Brian Felix's new project Drop Q. They're got some tunes up on their MySpace page, so check that out here (and of course be their friend too). Here's a brief bio on them....

DROP Q is Kris Myers on drums (Umphrey's McGee), Brian Felix on keys (OM Trio), Chris Clemente on bass (Kick the Cat), and Kalyan Pathak on Percussion (Fareed Haque Group). This veritable "Supergroup" of Chicago based musicians. With a focus on Improvised Electronica and Drum n Bass, all 4 members bring their substantial jazz and fusion chops to the table for a totally unique experience every time they hit the stage.

Check out their set from this year's Summer Camp....

Drop Q - 2006-05-27 - Summer Camp Music Festival - Three Sisters Park, Chillicothe, IL

Concerts, Concerts and More Concerts

Got a busy three days ahead of me - three shows in three nights. First up tonight dios (malos) and The Starlight Mints at the Bowery. Mainly going to see dios (malos) who I caught at the Great Bamboolzed a few years back playing on a side stage - and they were awesome. I remember them being pissed off about something and demanding the free beer they were promised. They were also involved in one of the stupider lawsuits around. Former Black Sabbath frontman and "originator" of the metal horns Ronnie James Dio served the band with a cease and desist order citing potential confusion over their similar names - I swear I'm not making this up read about it here.

Tomorrow night is Widespread at Irving for their album release party and Wednesday the so five minutes ago blogger band Arctic Monkeys at Roseland - more on those show later in the week. I'm also hoping to get my hands on a ticket for Band Of Horses for their Friday night show, so if anyone out there has an extra let me know.

The Strokes Get Soul

Been postings a lot about jambands lately so here's something for all you rock fans out there. Looks like The Strokes will be releasing a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me" (which appears on his seminal album "What's Going On") with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and QOTSA's Josh Homme. The song will be the B-side for their next single "You Only Live Once". Read the full article here.

You can hear the original version, along with watching the VH1 Classic video for it here.

Real People Do Win

Blogger has been on the fritz for the last day or so couldn't get a post up yesterday. What I did do yesterday though was win free tickets to the Widespread Panic album release party at Irving Plaza on Tuesday night. Go me! Pretty excited for it, though I do now have to get rid of my moe. tickets for their Central Park show (one of my favorite places to see a show) for that same night. Think it's always cool to see a band that plays much larger venues come back and play a pretty small one - should be a great night. Bringing my friend Chilly Jackwater who's by far the biggest Panic fan I know.

Here's a couple of quick facts...

WSP has played Irving 5 times, but hasn't played their in over 11 years - the last time being a two night run - April 7 & 8 of 1995.

In other Panic news they'll be playing Letterman on June 15th, so tune it for that.

Here they are playing "Give" on The Late Show from back in '01....

Seems like Oysterhead's appearance at Bonnaroo isn't just going to be a one-off performance. In a teleconference today Stewart Copeland admitted to potential plans for a full tour later this year. You can read the Billboard article here.

Soul Patrol Are The New Deadheads

Who knew that American Idol winner Taylor Hicks fans the Soul Patrol were such a heady bunch. As I was perusing the latest torrents on bt.etree.org I stumbled across this...

Taylor Hicks - 2005-12-23 - Workplay- Birimingham, Al

Taylor Hicks - Original Nashville Session - June 2001

Hicks may be the first Idol winner to have a taper section at his shows and people selling garlic grilled cheese in the lots. Be sure to check out some of the comments they're pretty amusing.

Quick Thoughts On MMJ & PJ

Kind of weird going to an arena show of a band who's music I don't really know that well. We walked in around 7:40ish and MMJ had already hit the stage (causing us to miss out on them doing The Band's "It Makes No Difference" - which I'm listening to right now and would have been the highlight of the night for me). Jim James & Co. rocked a mostly empty arena though for a good 40 minutes. Fourth time seeing them and it's been an interesting progression of venues - Mercury Lounge, Great Bamboolzed Festival, Webster Hall and Continental Airlines Arena. If there is any band out there ready to rock arena-sized venues it's them. Buy their records and go see them when they hit your town.

As for Pearl Jam - well I certainly wasn't blown away, it was an enjoyable show though. They definitely come to play and deliver on that with almost 2 1/2 hours of music and playing their last four or five songs with the arena lights on - playing well past the 11 PM cut-off they have their. We were stuck pretty much as far from the stage as you can get for most of the show, but by encore Dan from Apple Pop Life managed to sneak us down about as close to the stage as you could be without being on the floor. It was like seeing two different shows - good work Dan!!

For those interested here's the setlists....

Vince Welnick 1951-2006

Former Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick died of unknown causes yesterday at age 55. Here's the obit from Relix.....

Earlier today, June 2, Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick died of unknown causes. He was 55. Welnick, who played keyboards in the Grateful Dead from 1990 through 1995, cut his teeth performing in the California shock-rock band the Tubes in the 1970s. During his tenure with the Grateful Dead, Welnick contributed a number of original songs to the group's canon, most notably Samba in the Rain. Bruce Hornsby helped usher Welnick into the Dead, playing piano by his side through 1991. While Welnick did not participate in any of the Dead's studio sessions, his work can be heard on both the experimental live albums Infrared Roses (1991) and Grayfolded: Transitive Axis , as well as a handful of Dick's Picks releases. Following the passing of Jerry Garcia, Welnick urged the group to continue on, though his bandmates ultimately decided to retire the Grateful Dead name. Although Welnick did not participate in tours under the Others Ones or Dead monikers, he did perform in both RatDog and the Mickey Hart Band. He also formed his own group, the Missing Man Formation, which featured Steve Kimock (guitar), Bobby Vega (bass) and the Tubes' Prairie Prince (drums). More recently, Welnick clocked in time with Dead-inspired outfits Gent Treadly and Jack Straw. He is the fourth Grateful Dead keyboardist to pass, following Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Keith Godchaux and Brent Mydland.

Welnick was not without his demons. In 2003, the keyboard told Relix/Jambands.com, "I tried to off myself in the RatDog bus in '‘95, right before Christmas, right after The Dead died. I pretty much hit bottom there and I'm sure that hasn't helped my popularity with Bobby. I think that shook him up so much, and the other members of the band so much, that it contributed to why I am no longer being called to participate."” But, he did avoid certain trappings. "I coughed a pretty good attitude [laughs], but I didn't get into heroin," Welnick says. "I never used needles, never used freebase and that kind of stuff. I drew that line as a kid. No needles, no freebase, no heroin and never broke that promise myself."

Welnick, who was set to play a number of festivals and solo dates this summer, leaves behind a wife, Lorie.

PJ in NJ

Heading out to the Jerz tomorrow to catch My Morning Jacket & Pearl Jam at the Brendan Byrne Arena (a.k.a. Continental Airlines Arena). Never seen Peal Jam before and was mostly enticed by the fact the MMJ was opening - but heard they put on a hell of a live show, so looking forward to it. Been enjoying their new album, though by no means blown away by it. Really looking forward to seeing MMJ rock an arena though.

Here's some music from their recent stop in our nation's capital...

Bonnaroo In Your Room

If you can't make it down to Manchester you can experience the 'Roo in the privacy of your home via AT&T's Blue Room webcast. I watched when they did this for Vegoose and it's a great way to be a part of it without actually being there. So pitch a tent near your computer, fill up your cooler with some beverages and enjoy your AC while everyone is baking in the Tennessee heat.

Quick Thoughts On Last Night

Grace Potter is going to be a star. Sure she's going to get the inevitable Norah Jones comparisons, but they should read something like this....Grace Potter & The Nocturnals are like Norah Jones meets Crazy Horse. Really dug their set. Go buy their cd!

As for Mike Gordon & Ramble Dove. Thought it was a great show, though a bit on the long side. They came on around 10:30 and played two sets which ended around 1:20ish. I think they should have stuck to one long set instead of two, but the band was having a lot of fun up there. They played a mix of twangy country tunes both covers and originals. And if you haven't heard already Ernie stopped by and sat in for most of the show - which was an added bonus and so was the raging Possum in the second set.

When the torrent is up I'll post it. Definitely worth giving a listen to.

Head on over to Slack LaLane for Ace's thoughts on the show - here. And check out some photos from Danfun - here.

As Ace Cowboy got to see some history last weekend, I got to see some myself tonight. I've been at Yankee Stadium for some great moments. I've seen them win the pennant twice, been to three World Series games - including seeing November baseball and two walk-off home runs. Also had the pleasure of being on hand for Roger Clemens 300th win and 4,000th strikeout - which both occurred in the same game. Well tonight I got to see one Derek Sanderson Jeter get his 2,000 hit as a Yankee. Ok it was a barely a hit, more like a little roller that maybe went about ten feat but he redeemed himself later in the game with a solid base hit up the middle for 2001 (which they played over the loud speaker after it happened). Nothing like seeing a great player get reach a milestone achievement - hopefully I'll get to be on hand for 3,000 (which would make him the first Yankee to achieve that).

Just thought this was a clever logo for the upcoming SCI/Ratdog tour....

If you're heading down to the 'Roo you can start planning your days now that the official set times haves been announced. The fine folks at Jambase are offering up a printable version (sort of like NCAA brackets for the festival) and a way to customize your schedule so you don't miss anything - you'll need to logon to Jambase for that. Nice work fellas! There's 11 stages, tents, cafes and lounges full of stuff to see - damn that's a lot of music.

Here's a link to Archive.org's list of Bonnaroo shows.

Ok I haven't actually been there yet, but the new Apple Store on 5th Avenue - looks pretty damn cool though. Check out these pics, the store is located underground and it's open 24/7/365 - so if your Ipod isn't working at 3 A.M. you know where to take it....

Free Stuff...Well For Me

I finally got a free cd from having a blog (hint, hint to everyone reading this) so figured I'd give a plug to the band that sent it to me. The band is Bump and they're new cd is called Incredible Consequence. Here's a quick bio on the band from their MySpace page....

Growing up in the outskirts of the Motor City, it has become Bump's mission to resurrect the sounds that made Detroit a musical Mecca. After the recent years of Detroit's association with garage rock, hip-hop and rap rock, Bump is stepping up to fuse all the famous sounds the city was once known for. Yorg combines the hooks and harmonies of the Stevie Wonder with the stage presence of James Brown, while Chris Sterr echoes the guitar tones of Mick Taylor, David Gilmour and classic Detroit rock. Holding the rhythm section all together is Eric Novak, who drops tasty bass-lines reminiscent of James Jamerson, and Clint Carpenter on drums laying down the groove like the great Stewart Copeland. Bump has taken all of their Motown roots and has managed to create an unusual and unique sound to call their own.

Here's what some have had to say about them and their debut full length...

One More Saturday

Was going to write a whole post on my Saturday night hitting both the DSO show at the Nokia Theater and Rana at the Knit, but I'll spare you of most of the details. Needless to say I was in a funk all day Saturday and it was the right move. My last minute decision to head there solo was rewarded by bumping into a friend at a bar pre-show which ended up with me meeting and hanging out with her crew - good times.

Only seen Dark Star a few times and this was the first time with an original setlist. I was really pretty happy with their selections....

Sure you usually going to see this band to see them recreate a show, but hey I was just in the mood to hear some quality live Dead - something about hearing their songs always manages to put me in a good mood. Highlight for me was definitely Jack Straw which they absolutely ripped on. As for the venue - had heard mixed things, but I was digging it. Great sound, speakers in the bathrooms, the floor is slanted a bit so if you're all the way in the back (which we were) you can see the stage no problem, and it seemed like they were pouring heavy mixed drinks. My only issue was beer was all from cans - though Irving Plaza is the same.

After the show wrapped up we decided to head down the Knit to catch Rana - a band that I hadn't seen in at least three or four years since their record release party at CBGB's. We walked in probably twenty minutes into their set and they were rockin' out. Didn't know any of the songs, but was still having a good time. They've definitely morphed into more of a rock band since they last time I'd seen them. Here's a brief review of the show from Relix.com...

On Saturday, RANA returned to the stage for the first time in 2006 for a performance at New York's Knitting Factory. After years on the northeast music circuit, the members of RANA spent the past few months focusing on a number of other projects, with guitarist Scott Metzger joining Particle, drummer Ryan Thornton focusing on Sam Champion and keyboardist Matt Durant gigging with King of France. While RANA speaks out against the sit-in during its "Go Home Hippie," the group invited a number of guests onto the stage throughout its set Saturday including The Antibalas Horns, who performed "Minca Malinca," "Loves It Automatic," "My One Dear Son," and "Bloodshed," as well as the encore of "It's So Hard (Believe Me)," "Good Book," "Not So Mopso" and "Backstage Pass." Later Dan Piper played lap steel on a number of songs beginning with "I'm Not Orfeo." Referencing its semi-hiatus, RANA also debut Durant's new original, "While Sam Champion Owned the Bowery."

Didn't stay for their whole show, but enjoyed what I heard and would definitely go and see them again soon if they find the time to get back together for some more shows. So ended up having a great night after a sub par day - thanks Jenny!!

Bust Out The Hula-Hoop - Update

Apparently I spoke too soon yesterday about the SCI tour. They will now be teaming up with Ratdog who will be on the road with them for most of the tour. The two bands will alternate headlining spots throughout the tour - guess Bobby didn't want to be out done by Phil this summer.

Now I may have to hit one of the Radio City shows.

Pearl Jam @ Irving Plaza Reviews

Head on over to Brooklyn Vegan for some reviews and pictures from Friday night's Pearl Jam show at Irving Plaza. Check it out here.

Seeing Pearl Jam in less then a month out in the Jerz with My Morning Jacket. Never seen them before, looking forward to it. I missed out on the whole grunge thing and I really don't have any legitimate excuses for it. I was in high school when Ten came out and should have been full of teen angst, but I think I was too busy listening to Billy Joel cds to pay attention to other things - I've certainly made up for lost time though.

moe.down, vol. 7

Here's initial line-up for the 7th installment of moe.down...

Umphrey's McGee
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
The Avett Brothers
Apollo Sunshine

Radiohead Tourdates

I know it may be blasphemous to say that I have a music blog and I'm not much of a Radiohead fan - it's like saying I still like the Arctic Monkeys. I think I decided I wasn't going to like them when OK Computer came out just because everyone was gushing over it. Inevitably though when my roommate has put his music on random play and a song comes up that I'm digging and have no idea what it is it's Radiohead - so maybe I should start listening to them, I'd probably actually like them.
