Wetlands Preserved

A documentary about the famed extinct rock club The Wetlands Preserve will be making it's debut on the final night of the Green Apple Music & Film Festival - Sunday, April 23rd at 6:30 PM. Here's the lowdown from Jambands.com...

A documentary film that traces the history of fabled New York City nightclub Wetlands Preserve, will close out the Green Apple Music and Arts festival. The world premiere of Wetlands Preserved: The Story of an Activist Rock Club will take place on Sunday, April 23, 6:30PM at New York’s Ziegfeld Theater. The film incorporates archival footage, soundboard recordings and the efforts of a dozen digital animators to chronicle the club’s tenure from February 1989 through September 2001. Wetlands Preserved features music from Phish, Blues Traveler, moe., The Disco Biscuits, Dave Matthews Band, Sublime, Ben Harper, Spearhead, 311, Ani DiFranco, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Spin Doctors, Fishbone, Agnostic Front and many additional artists. The film was directed by site editor Dr. Dean Budnick (who aside from being a longtime Wetlands denizen, wrote his Harvard doctoral dissertation on the films of Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle). Tickets for the premiere, will go on sale via Relix.com next Tuesday at noon, with additional details soon to follow.

I'm definitely going to try and score a ticket for this, should be quite the nostaglic night. Spent quite a few nights there catching some great music and was sad to see it and the scene the it fostered go.

Who Wears Short, Shorts?

I've been pretty sucky about putting up anything of note lately - sorry to all my loyal readers about that (all lets say ten - though hopefully it's more). Anyway work has kept me busy, so it's been hard to update during the day.


With that out of the way, I'm hitting the Ratdog show tomorrow night at the Beacon Theater. Haven't seen Bobby in awhile and looking forward to it. Though wish he'd play more Bobby songs rather then a bunch of Jerry tunes. I'd much rather hear Black Throated Wind, Jack Straw and Greatest Story Ever Told over him trying to sing Wharf Rat - but hey that's me, I'd much rather hear the classics.

I guess there could be a whole argument made about who is he really playing for by doing those tunes - but I ain't no playa hata.

Awhile back I posted about some items from Jerry Garcia's house being put up for auction - bathtubs, fridge, light fixtures and his toilet - well there's been an update to the story. First off the toilet sold for $2,550 to the online casino Goldenpalace.com ,who planned on using it for a traveling exhibition of weird memorabilia. Even stranger then that the salmon colored toilet has been stolen before it was ready to ship out. Read about it here.

Tried to get tickets for The Reconteurs show at Irving today, but seemed like the show sold out in less then a minute. I was on at 12 on the nose and before the clock on my computer even turned to 12:01 Ticketmaster was telling me that there were no tickets left. So if anyone out there has one or two tickets to spare let me know, would love to catch this show.

If not will probably be hitting the Josh Rouse show at Town Hall that night instead. Go pick up his new album Subtitulo - it's damn good.

The Reconteurs @ Irving Plaza

Jack White's pop-rock side project with fellow Detroit resident Brendan Benson - The Reconteurs - will be playing Irving Plaza on April 7th. This is only American show scheduled besides an appearance at this summer's Lollapolooza.



Tickets go on sale March 30th, at noon - good luck, this is going to be a hot ticket.

Swan Song

Check out Chuck Klosterman's last two pieces for Spin - My Backpages - 1990 & his review of the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong-awaited Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy. Am I really to believe that this album is finally going to see the light of day??

We'll see where Chuck ends up now that he's left Spin, but definitely a move for the best as Spin changes formats yet again and for the worse. Glad I found out the news before I sent in my renewal form.

Scalpers Suck

I was pretty optimistic that I'd roll up to the Beacon last night and find a reasonably priced ticket outside. Boy was I wrong. What I found was about 10-15 ticket scalpers roaming the block harassing anyone and everyone who was trying to buy or sell extras. Slightly frustrating. Sure if I wanted to pony about 150 bucks I could have bought one off these guys, but a) that was way out my price range and b) no way was I going to support these guys who made it impossible to buy a ticket off anyone without them barging in and throwing cash at people. The scalpers were not only walking the block in front of the Beacon, but also standing in front of bars and restaurants in the area - they've definitely got a bit more resourceful.

So the moral of the story here is don't buy tickets from scalpers and please don't sell your extras to them. Sure I was slightly frustrated and disappointed that I didn't get in, but hey they probably got stuck with a fist load of tickets they couldn't get rid of.

March Madness

The Allman Brothers Band are wrapping the annual run at the Beacon this weekend. I think I'm going to try and score a ticket for tonight's show. So if anyone out there is reading this and has an extra they want to sell let me know.

Some rumors floating around are that the estranged Brother Dickey Betts will be showing up tonight and also that John Hammond will be sitting in as well.

The Way Back Machine

Last night caught Lo Faber at Sin-e with Ace Cowboy and while it might not have been the all old school setlist I was hoping for it was still a fun time and man did some of those songs make me feel quite nostalgic. God Street Wine was probably the first jamband band I got into after the Dead and Phish. Seems like that whole wave of mid-90s jambands are all but gone - Leftover Salmon, Ominous Seapods, Strangefolk (well the original line-up), etc.

Jazzfest Late Night

Superfly has announced its initial late-night line-up for Jazzfest. Here's the lowdown from Relix....

Throughout the two weekend festival, Superfly will present a number of artists aboard the Riverboat Cajun Queen including a John Medeski-bolstered version of Garage a Trois (4/28), The Radiators (4/29) and The Greyboy Allstars (5/4). In addition, Superfly will present a series of double bills at the Big Easy’s Contemporary Arts Center, the site of the company’s earliest shows, including Gov't Mule / Galactic with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (5/5) and The Meters/Robert Randolph and the Family Band (5/6). Jenny Lewis @ Irving

Head on over to Fresh Bread for a review of the Jenny Lewis show from Saturday night. I had a ticket to go, but was a on a shoot all day and couldn't muster enough energy to make it there. Was kind of bummed that night and even more so now that I read the review - but definitely needed the rest.

Hopefully she'll be back again soon. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Check out how freaky tall the Watson Twins are in those pictures.

Odds & Ends

Sorry for the lack of posts, but work has kept me pretty busy the last week or so. I will try and get back into the habit of getting stuff up on a regular basis though.

So just a couple of things to report on. Seems like the Allman Brothers shows at the Beacon have been hot from what I've been reading. Guests have been a plenty including over this past weekend Taj Mahal and Ben Harper. Plus the decided they'd also pay tribute the probably the greatest live album ever made by performing Live At The Fillmore East in the order it appears on the album on it's 35th anniversary. Damn, I've got to get me to one of the remaining shows.

In other Allman's related news Gov't Mule is set to headline the second annual Mountain Jam on June 3rd & 4th at Hunter Mountain in Hunter, NY. Also scheduled to appear are Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Mike Gordon and Ramble Dove, MMW, Michael Franti & Spearhead, DJ Logic, the Benevento/Russo Duo, John Brown's Body, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, The Wood Brothers, Shannon McNally, The Benzos, Joey Eppard and The Trapps. Looks like a great line-up so far.

Happy St. Paddy's Day

It's been a bit of a crazy week for me, so once again apologize for the lack of posts. Hope everyone is having a great St. Patrick's Day. Heard way too much bagpipe music from the office since we're right off the parade route on 5th Avenue. Anyway big win for GW last night - too bad I had to miss it because of work. We take on the Dukies tomorrow - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we pull the upset.

In other news the initial line-up for Lollapalooza has been announced and looks pretty damn good. Hometown heroes Wilco are among the headliners.

No Respect

For those of you that read my blog on a semi-regular basis you how big a fan I am of my alma mater The George Washington University men's basketball team. Well it's been a frustrating 24 hours for me after watching the NCAA Selection Show last night - so I'm just going to rant a little. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the NCAA Selection Committee. What were they thinking when they decided they'd give GW a number 8 seed in the tournament? How is this possible? This is a team that lost only one game during the regular season. Went undefeated in conference play. And most importantly was in the Top 25 for the entire season. So explain please will someone explain the low seeding to me? Most people had us penciled in at a number five at worst. Seeding us number 8 means essentially is saying we're not even a Top 25 team.

That's not the worst of it. Ok sure if you want to give an 8 seed I guess I can live with it if I have to, but where to they get off having them play UNC Wilmington a nine seed in North Carolina? How does this reward a team that had their best season in over 50 years? A team that won the Atlantic 10 regular season title two years in a row and who is getting their best player back from injury this week? Just doesn't make sense to me. Why weren't we put in the DC region at least? Yes I know they had one of the worst S.O.S. in all of Division I basketball, but we're not talking about a team out of the America East or the Northeast Conference.

Anyway just had to vent. The news doesn't get any better for the Colonials if they win their first round match-up they'd be pitted against a little team of Durham, NC - seriously could we have been screwed anymore????

Odds & Ends

Haven't been to good at posting much of anything this week - I'll blame it on starting a new job that has kept me pretty busy. Despite my lack of posts I did manage to squeeze in a couple of shows. Wednesday night saw Nada Surf for the second time in about a month. Definitely a tighter show then I saw at the Merc, but think they played for a little too long and played a few too many slow tunes that kind of took the crowd out of it for some stretches. Love them though. Go pick up their last two albums - seriously go and do it today.

Friday night I finally got to see my first Tea Leaf Green show at the Knit. These guys definitley lived up to most of the hype - though thought the mix was a bit muddy. When you cover The Velvet Underground, The Beatles and Bob Dylan in the same show along with some great original stuff you'll make a fan out of me and get me out to see you again. Also thanks to the heady people at VH1 you can hear a snippet of their tune 'Sea Monkeys' on I Love Toys - I'm sure you can figure out what it was used for.

This may be good news or bad news depending on how you look at it, but TLG has been asked to play as part of Dave Matthews Band Island Getaway this summer on Randall's Island - with Gov't Mule and Bela Fleck & The Flecktones (plus more to be announced). Definitely a big break for them, but do you really want to attract the DMB fans to your shows? Discuss.

Green Apple Music Fest

The Green Apple Music & Art Festival has finally revealed their line-up and concert schedule -check it out here. Slightly underwhelming if you ask me, but still some decent things to check out. Unfortunately just seems like a regular weekend of music here in the city, though obviously more jamband focused. Thought there would be more interesting bills somewhat in the spirit of the Jammys - though here's to hoping to some quality sit-ins.

Any guess on the 'Very Special Artist' listed to be playing Bowery Ballroom to close the festival out?? I'm gonna go with Ernest Anastasio III.

Odds & Ends

Not too much going on to post about today. Starting my new job on Monday - which I'm really excited about, so if my post become somewhat sporadic blame it on the new gig. I'll try my very best though to get stuff up - I'm sure it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Anyway, apparently Hookaville - the multi-day bi-annual festival hosted by Ohio jammers ekoostik hookah - is turning 25. The event will be taking place on May 26-28 at Legend Valley. Already scheduled to take part is Blues Traveler (look for a big summer from them), Yonder Mountain String Band and Great American Taxi, with more to be announced. From what I've read this is a really solid, small festival.

It's been a rough year or so for hookah who have had a bunch of line-up changes with most notably Ed McGee leaving the band (though they have invited their original guitar player back, who hasn't played with the band in over ten years). I have been a fan of these guys for awhile and had the pleasure of catching a few of their NYC shows. They really never seemed to catch on outside the Mid-West, which was a shame - they're a great song oriented, roots-jamband and actually put out a couple of really solid albums too.

Spinning

I really couldn't care less about when magazines get bought and sold, hire and fire editors and all that stuff - well except a little bit when it come to magazines I read. Well Spin magazine was recently sold and editor-in-chief Sia Michel was fired and replaced by former Blender editor-in-chief Andy Pemberton. Ok so who cares? Well with Michel leaving, Chuck Klosterman has decided to pack it in as well. I swear I think his back page feature he'd been doing was the only reason I keep reading that magazine. Well it's probably for the best for Chuck since Pemberton said the magazine is going to focus on a 'younger demographic'. Great more coverage on bands I couldn't give a shit about. Read about here. (via Gawker) Looks like that re-subcription letter they just sent me will be going right in the trash.

Baseball Is Back!

I may be one of only a handful of people that are excited for the Yankees spring training opener today, but it's been a long winter without baseball. So yes I will be tuning into the YES Network today at 1 P.M. to watch all the excitement of Grapefruit League Baseball. Sure the regular players only play about an inning or two and you have guys running laps around the field while the game is going on, but hey it's baseball and I'm excited.

Gorillaz To Play Apollo Theater

Fictional cartoon band the Gorillaz will play the famous Apollo Theater on April 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. The band will recreate last year's album Demon Days with the guest musicians featured on the album. Already confirmed are De La Soul, Ike Turner, Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde, Neneh Cherry, Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder, UK rapper Roots Manuva - and more to be announced.

Tickets go on sale March 10th at 11 A.M. via Ticketmaster. This could be really cool, though heard mixed things about when the toured a few years back behind their debut album.

Flaming Lips To Play Webster Hall

Everyone's favorite psychedelic-pop-rock band The Flaming Lips will be playing Webster Hall here in NYC on March 31st and April 1st. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, March 1st at noon. Tickets are $35.


Should be a great place to see the Lips and their multi-media stage show they bring along with them. If you haven't seen them live though I'd highly recommend checking them out - it's really a different experience then anything you're going to see. I've seen the band twice and while yes I enjoyed the shows Wayne can get a bit chatty and forget the band is there to play music. But when you throw in the fact that there are people dancing in animal costumes, tons of balloons, music videos playing behind the band, confetti shooting all over the place, and the possibility of Wayne getting into a giant bubble and walking around how can you not love this band. It's like going to the circus, but without the bad smells.

Particle's New People

Particle has finally revealed who their new guitarist is going to be and it's actually not one, but two guitarists - Scott Metzger (of RANA fame - wonder how this will effect them?) & Ben Combe. I never really got into the whole Particle thing. I did see them play their first NYC show at the Knitting Factory back in '01 - but that's really been my only exposure to them. I've heard they've evolved a lot since then and are quite good at what they do - especially if your ingesting the appropriate things.

Back in November Glide ran a Q&A with their former guitarist Charlie Hitchcock. It's an interesting read and gives a good glimpse into how the line-up change came about. Read it here.

I've seen a few posts about this already but had to just mention it here because it's pretty damn exciting if you ask me. Guitar phenom Derek Trucks has been asked to be a member of Eric Clapton's band for his upcoming tour. Let that sink in for a moment......................................Yeah it's going to be good, I'm giddy with excitement about the potential of this.

As of right now they only have European dates scheduled. I'm crossing my fingers they decide to do some shows here in the good 'ol U.S. of A. because I'd certainly be willing to part with my hard earned cash for that.

Quest For Festeroo

From the twisted mind of everyone's favorite alt.rocker turned jambander Les Claypool comes his first feature film the mockumentary Electric Apricot: The Quest For Festeroo. The movie features cameos from the likes of Cactus, Bob Weir, Warren Haynes and more and will premiere at Tiburon Film Festival and also will appropriately be screened at the movie tent at Bonnaroo.

Les has really gone all out with this one. Check out the EP website here - it features photos, bios and more. You can also download and watch the trailer here. Definitely worth it - it's damn funny.

Not sure that anyone really cares who wins these things - it's more of a formality to give some time to set up the stage for the next performance then anything else. It is nice to see that they looked beyond the normal 'jamband' acts for some of this stuff. You can vote for the awards here.

Jammys

The initial line-up for the 6th Annual Jammy awards has been announced. Read the press release here and the initial line-up here. Some interesting acts on the bill already, but I think The Secret Machines are primed to blow some minds that night. I've been to the Jammys a couple of times - it's a fun time and a loooooooong night of music. The collaborations are sometimes hit or miss, but when they hit they are quite good.

The Jammys will be kicking off the first Green Apple Music & Arts Festival - something that I've been hearing about for awhile, but that nothing has actually been announced about.

Another Fine Day

Some exciting news for fans of the short-lived supergroup Golden Smog. The band is set to release it's new album Another Fine Day this July. Read about it from Jambands.com....

Veteran supergroup Golden Smog will release its fourth album, Another Fine Day, on July 18. Featuring Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Gary Louris, Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks), Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum), Another Fine Day marks the first Golden Smog album since 1998’s Weird Tales. In addition to a handful of originals, Another Fine Day will also feature a cover of the Dave Davies’s “Strangers” rearranged as a duet for Louris and Tweedy. Recorded in both Spain and Minneapolis, Another Fine Day also boasts contributions for a pair of well-respected drummers: Linda Pitmon (Steve Wynn, Zuzu’s Petals) and Jody Stephens (Big Star). Wilco will perform next at Chapel Hill, NC's Memorial Hall.

If your a fan of Americana/alt.country you're going to love these guys. I highly recommend Weird Tales and Down By The Old Mainstream. Jeff Tweedy still does some of his Golden Smog songs when he plays solo.

Phish 'Round Room' Outtakes

Head on over to Jesse Jarnow's Frank & Earthy Blog for three outtakes from Phish's Round Room sessions. Phil Lesh & Ryan Adams Recording Together?

Saw this posted over on the Philzone rumors page and thought I'd post it here....

Rumors have been circulating for awhile now that Phil & Ryan Adams have been doing some studio sessions together. While we don't have any details, we can confirm that they have done some collaborative work at Loho Studios in NYC as they are listed as recent clients.

I've seen two Phil shows on this tour and have to say they've done a stellar job with the Ryan tunes, they've been some of the highlights of the shows for me. Joan doing Nobody Girl on Tuesday night was killer.

WWJD?

Apparently a sex tape featuring Kid Rock and former Creed frontman Scott Stapp engaging in some sexual acts with four females on a tour bus is set to be released in the near future. I'm not so surprised about Kid Rock being apart of this - I would have thought one would have come out already. The more puzzling thing is what hell was he doing on tour with Creed?? Read about it here. Stereogum has got the trailer, so head over their for that.

I guess this just adds for fuel to the fire for the much maligned Stapp. First he gets into a fist fight with members of the band 311 around Thanksgiving time. Then after claiming soberiety in a recent Rolling Stone article was arrested recently for public drunkenness, while trying to board a plane for this honeymoon. He blood alcohol test registered a 0.18 - twice the legal limit.

Jazzfest

I know I'm a little late on reporting this, but the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will be taking place this year on April 28-30 & May 5-7. Read the press release here. Definitely some great news for the city of New Orleans as they continue to rebuild from Katrina. Some of the artists that are already confirmed for the fairgrounds are The Meters, Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Galactic as well as a ton of local New Orleans acts. No late night shows have been announced yet, but as they do I'll keep you posted.

Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza will once again be returning this summer to the Windy City. The festival will now be a three day affair with 8 stages and roughly 130 bands performing. Read about it here. The big rumor is that Chicago's own Smashing Pumpkins will be the headliner. Stay tuned for artist line-up and ticket info - which will be coming at some point in the next month or so. Definitely good news for Justin over at LMB.

Heckle & Jeckle

P&F Review

My expectations weren't that high going into the Phil & Friends show on Saturday night. I was a bit disappointed there would be no Ryan Adams appearance and wasn't that thrilled with the line-up he had pulled together - no real lead singer. Despite all that I was ready to hear some Grateful Dead music and to have an interesting cab ride home in a blizzard - which is always a good time.

The first set started off in typical P&F fashion with a warm-up jam that lead into China Cat -> Rider - which was sort of uninspiring. Scarlet with Phil singing wasn't winning me over much either. My mood started to change though as Barry Sless dropped his guitar and moved over to the pedal steel as Scarlet segued into The Wheel, this is when things really started clicking and the band found their groove. They nailed the rest of the country/americana tinged set. Ryan Adams Let It Ride off of Cold Roses fit in nicely and might have been the highlight of the set, until they absolutely nailed Cumberland Blues - a song that may be my favorite of the Workingman's/American Beauty era Dead. The UJB closer put the cap on what ended up being a stellar first set.

As an empty microphone stand on stage went unused in the first set a roadie brought out another guitar during the break and we knew Phil had something up his sleeve for set two. Well as the lights went down the familiar (and a bit slimed down) Warren Haynes made his way to the stage. Probably the easiest of guests to predict to be sitting in during this run, but always a welcomed sight. Set two had more old school P&F show feel - meaning it was much more jammy. Where as Phil was calling the shots in the first set, Warren was at the helm in the second. Set two opened with Shakedown which eventually moved into Viola Lee Blues - the jam vehicle for the set. This set had a more blues-y feel and saw Joan take center stage a couple of times while channeling her best Janis & Pigpen with some great blues raps during Hard To Handle & Caution. Have to admit I was quite impressed with her performance throughout the night especially during these songs. The band weaved in and out of Viola Lee and eventually leading into a sped up version of Bertha. Set finished out with Fire On The Mountain & Not Fade Away which is always the crowd pleaser.

Coming back out for the encore they busted out Strawberry Fields Forever - the venue's proximity to the Dakota certainly made it a fitting selection, plus the Dead always loved playing Beatles tunes too. Warren nailed Comes A Time which has become a love letter to Jerry and they closed out the night with the psychedelic freak-out of The Golden Road leaving us all to head out into the blizzard of '06 with perma-grins on are faces.

Saturday In The Park

Well as New York prepares for it's first snow storm since December (apparently now it's back to being a blizzard) I'm gearing up for what is hopefully going to be a nice little Saturday that I have planned. First up at 2 PM I'll be watching the #8 George Washington Colonials take on the St. Joe's Hawks on ESPN2. I seriously still have a hard time believing that we're in the Top Ten at times. We're finally getting some of the press and respect that this team was lacking all season - hopefully we live up to the hype. We haven't won at Alumni Fieldhouse since 1998, but did beat St. Joe's by 12 earlier this season.

I'm certainly not as excited as yesterday now that the possibility of Ryan Adams joining them is out, but still should be a good time and maybe Phil has got something special up his sleeve for tonight. Find it weird that he's doing this tour without a big time lead singer. Sure Joan was great singing back-up with The Dead a few years back, but not sure if she can carry the show. I'll give you my review tomorrow.

Bonnaroo Additions

Well it doesn't come as that much of a surprise, but Oysterhead has been added to the Bonnaroo line-up. Superfly is basically responsible for getting this super-group together in the first place during JazzFest '00. This will be the first time the group has played together since '01, but there had been hints about them getting back together for some time now. Hopefully this won't be a one off and they'll do a national tour.


Also Umphrey's McGee and the Disco Biscuits will be playing a special joint late-night show, offering interlocking sets - should be quite the throwdown.

Unfortunately it looks like the most buzzed about jamband around, Tea Leaf Green, won't be making a return appearance to Manchester this year. TLG offers this explanation from their message board....

In the spirit of keeping you all informed so you can plan accordingly, we must announce that Tea Leaf Green will not be performing at Bonnaroo this year. Rest assured that we made every effort to secure an invitation to return to the scene of last summer's spectacular set. Understand that our good friends at Superfly have a policy to try and not have back-to-back performances by the same band two years in a row. Applying this policy, we have been deemed ineligible to play this year. We'd be lying if we said we weren't disappointed. But even though we do not agree with the decision, we must respect it. The fine folks at Superfly have been supportive of us and our music over the years and we look forward to working with them again and again in the years to come. If you are headed to Manchester this year, come a day early and catch our show at the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, less than an hour east on June 14. Chins up, Leafers! We'll rock the 'Roo in '07!!!

Cold Rain & Snow

I'm going to be catching Phil & Friends tomorrow night at the Beacon and I'm quite excited about it - definitely need my Dead fix. Haven't seen any Dead related bands in quite awhile and haven't seen a Phil & Friends show since '01. I got a bit tired of their endless noodling jams that didn't seem to go anywhere, but I'm ready for tomorrow night. Phil revealed his band for the New York run today (from Relix)....

Hours before he is set to begin his New York residency at Manhattan's Beacon Theater, Phil Lesh has revealed his band's lineup. The bassist publicly announced on Sirius Radio that singer Joan Osborne, keyboardist Rob Barraco, pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless, guitarist/fiddler Larry Campbell and drummer Jeff Sipe will join him at both the Beacon Theater this weekend and at the Hammerstein Ballroom next week. Since reviving his Friends band in late 2004, Lesh has rotated players each tour, shuffling over a dozen musicians in-and-out of his lineup in the past two years. With the exception of Sipe, tonight's lineup will mirror the band Lesh used for his San Francisco New Year's Run. Sometime "Friend" Ryan Adams, who first performed with Lesh at the 2005 Jammy Awards, also made a surprise appearance with the bassist on New Year's Eve, as many fans hope he will tonight.

Hoping for Ryan tomorrow night, but would by happy with Chris Robinson as well. Or maybe Phil will deal us a wild card - Trey does live in NYC now.

Oh also there is supposed to be a blizzard that is going to hit NYC tomorrow - though I've heard conflicting reports.

Despite how pandering the first few paragraphs are the article does do a good job in giving in giving a quick course in Sly 101.

Go Back Into Hiding

I think Ace Cowboy and I are mentally linked today. I was going to post my thoughts on Sly Stone at the Grammys last night, but Ace literally said just about everything I was planning on down to the title of his post and his description of Sly - 'Oh My' - I used that last night when im'ing with someone to discuss how I felt about it. So read his post here, and if you didn't get to see what he looked like see below.....


I think the best part of the whole thing was when Sly walked off the stage after performing for about two minutes. Seemed like everyone was expecting to come back on, including the people in the control room who kept going to a wide shot of the stage. My other thought is that they actually had rehearsals for this with Sly - if I was producing the Grammys I think I would had told him to go back to whatever hole his was hiding in because this is no way for people to see him again. It was just plain sad. He makes Brian Wilson look like a perfectly functioning member of society.

A Whole Bunch Of Nothing

Not really feeling to inspired today to write about any in particular. I did see Nada Surf last night at the Merc - it was a warm-up show for their tour that starts tonight in Baltimore. This was the first time I've seen them after being obsessed with Let Go for about the last year or so - I seriously recommend picking this album up. Thought it was a really solid show and the band was very loose as well, seemed like were playing to a room full of their friends. I'm sort of considering going to see them again when they come back to town to play Webster Hall in March just to see them play a more polished show.

Since I'm going to be starting a new job in about a month and going to be traveling a good amount as a part of it I'm making it my mission to see a lot of music before the baseball season starts in April. Here's some of the shows I'm strongly considering hitting....

Today got offered the opportunity to work on a show for the YES Network called Ultimate Road Trip - which I'm extremely psyched about. So essentially I'll be combining two of my passions into one job - television production and the Yankees.

This was a post show impromptu bluegrass jam. Line-up consists of Mike (banjo and electric bass), Page (upright bass), Trey (fiddle and guitar), Fish (mandolin), Rev. Jeff Mosier (banjo), Eric Merrill (fiddle and guitar), and Jeremy (banjo and jaw harp).

My On The Go List

I remember reading around the time that Almost Famous came out that Cameron Crowe made a mixtape every month and he had boxes and boxes of them. I thought that was the coolest idea and vowed I'd do the same. Well needless to say that never happened. I've probably made about three mix cds in the last four or five years - I'm such a slacker.

Linkage

While the Arctic Monkeys are the buzz band on the indie blogs, TLG certainly has to take the honor as far as jamband blogs go. Well I finally picked up a ticket to see them play the Knit on March 10th - really looking forward to seeing these boys live. Here's a review of their January 30th show in Grand Rapids, MI (via LMB).

Here's a review of the Dr. Dog show I was at last week (via Glide Magazine). Seriously if you have the opportunity go check these guys out. The show last week was packed and from reading the review there were about 40 waiting outside just to get in. They put on a great, fun live show and their music just makes me happy - what else can I say.

New York magazine waded through all of Ryan Adams solo material to come up with a list of selected cuts to bring you 'What's Good About Ryan'.

Billboard's got a piece on Bonnaroo which includes SuperFly president Jonathan Mayers thoughts on programming the festival. Read it here.

Finally the Washington Post has got this really interesting article on the reclusive Sly Stone and the rumor of a possible reunion with the Family Stone at the Grammys next week - might actually have to tune in now and see if it happens. This would be Sly's first major public appearance since January 12, 1993 when his group was inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. Read it here.

Kobe Who?

Remember when Kobe Bryant dropped 81 points about two weeks ago against the Toronto Raptors? Well that's old news now. New York City prep-star Epiphanny Prince of Murry Bergtraum High School scored 113 points in a game Wednesday in a 137-32 victory over Brandeis High School. The 113 points breaks a girls' national prep record previously held by Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller who once scored 105 points back in 1982.

In other basketball news my GW Colonials are ranked #10 in the nation by both the AP and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. This is the first time GW has cracked the #10 in 50 years. The Colonials face off against conference rivals Xavier tonight at 7 PM on ESPN2 (read the game preview here). Tune in and see the team that CBS's Seth Davis this past Sunday rated as his dark horse tournament team - predicting them to go to at least the Sweet 16.

Lots Of Post Today - I Promise

Your friendly neighborhood blogger was feeling a bit under the weather yesterday and couldn't motivate to get another post up, but today I'm feeling a lot better and ready to get back to work.

First up on my to do list my thoughts on the Bonnaroo line-up. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with it. While it may be a bit light on the typical jambands you've seen there in the past I think there is a good cross-section of a lot of genres and a lot of bands that will appeal to the jam audience - Bright Eyes, Dungen, Devendra Banhart, Seu Jorge, The Magic Numbers & dios (malos). I'm sure there already is plenty of discussions going on at message boards across the net about the line-up. The jam kids bashing Superfly for not having every jamband in existence on the roster and the indie-kids trying to figure out what the hell a Flecktone is.

The thing to remember is that this is the just the initial line-up and everyone will feel satisfied in the end. Has Superfly let us down yet?? My feeling is that they're trying to expand their audience a bit. They know people that have been there before will want to come back, now their trying to bring a different group of fans to show them what the 'Roo is all about.

Some initial thoughts for the second round of artist additions - SerialPod, The Secret Machines, The Shins and The Flaming Lips.

Bonnaroo & Coachella

Sorry for the lack of posts over the last couple of days. While I was losing money at Mohegan Sun on Monday and watching the Nets hand the Pistons only their sixth loss of the season last night, two major music festival announced their initial line-ups. First up was Monday's Coachella announcement. As you could expect it was a who' who of the indie rock scene with Depeche Mode and Tool headlinings the two nights. Not to be outdone though as had been the rumor for the past few weeks Radiohead and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers will headline the fifth installment of Bonnaroo.
