Distractions

Ok so it's the Monday after a long weekend and odds are you're not really concentrating on work all that much today so here's a quick quiz to keep you busy about The Beatles post break-up careers.

Not to brag, but I got 10 of 10 - though it's not really all that tough.

Also here's a couple more quizzes for you - match the Grateful Dead album with the year it came out and Dancing Bear's Newbie And Acid Test Dead Trivia Challenge. Good luck.

Langerado Artist Update

Ok so maybe the initial line-up for Langerado was a little too crunchy for you to book you flight down to Florida. Well fear not the second round of acts have been announced and they are a little more hipster friendly....

Cat Power and The Dirty Blues Band
The Hold Steady
Cut Chemist

And just a reminder tickets go on-sale this Friday at 10 AM.

Thanksgiving Tradtion

Last year I wrote about the Thanksgiving tradition we have at the HFTB House. So this year through the magic of Stream Stash - got to love that site - I present to you Arlo Guthrie's 18 plus minute anti-establishment ode Alice's Restaurant Massacree. I don't know how many years I've been listening to this song, but it's held up extremely well. I still laugh at the same parts and you have to marvel in the fact that this was performed live in front of an audience. So seriously if you've never listened to this - or even you have - I highly suggest taking a small part of your day and giving it a spin.

If you're in the New York City area you can tune radio dial to Q104.3 at noon for their annual playing of the tune too.

I asked this question last year, but is there any other part of the country and plays this song on Thanksgiving too??

Music Video Mondays - Wednesday Edition

Tonight's the biggest bar night of the year which got me thinking of "bar" songs, so here's Cat Power with the fantastic "Lived In Bars"....

If you don't own her magnificent album The Greatest go out and buy it today - it's going be on a lot of top ten lists this year so you won't want to miss out.

Hipsters, hippies and even country music fans got good news this week for the '07 festival season. First up Coachella will once again return to the Empire Polo Field in Indio, CA this time around as a three day festival from April 27-29 - artist announcements to come early next year.

Showtime

Thanksgiving is a great time to be a live music fan here in New York. Last year I caught 4 shows over the course of the long weekend, and this year there are a plethora of choices again. As of now only have tickets to see Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood - which I couldn't be more excited about - but also have my eyes on a couple of other things, to help burn off all that turkey.

So what's everyone else out there seeing this weekend? Seems like there are lot of stuff to catch. Leave your plans in the comments section and if you'd like to send some reviews my way shoot me an email and I'd be more then happy to post them.

Jambands and music videos are like oil and water. Despite that preface, stumbled across one of my favorite mid-90s jam act - God Street Wine's video for "RU4 Real?", enjoy....

Two question what's up with the creepy guy in the hat that looks like Flea? And why are their kids that look like punk fans in this??

Capitol Of Punk

Forget about seeing the numerous monuments or hitting up the Smithsonians on your next trip to our nation's capital. Instead all you need to do is head to the corner of 7th and E St NW and text "DCSPACE" to start you text messaged tour of the Capitol of Punk - which consists of ten text based walks. This is all the brainchild of the people at Yellow Arrow who have also have similar tours for the East Village and for the Voodoo Music Festival in New Orleans.

If you can't make it to D.C. you can still experience the tour here - via their website that has an interactive map with video clips which is the next best thing.

Read about the tour here.

The All-TIME 100 Albums

Who doesn't love a good music list? Well the fine folks over at Time (always a place I go to first for cd reviews) has thrown their hat into the ring putting together their All-TIME 100 Albums - it's broken up by decade with a blurb about each album and is pretty much what you'd expect from such a list.

My question is how can they get away with putting Bob Marley's Legend on their list - how can a greatest hits album even be considered?

Discuss.

The Music Of Bob Dylan Show Review

For those of you that are interested here's a brief recap of the show last night from John E. Links who was kind enough to post it in the comments section earlier....

I was there last night...the show had it's ups and downs as expected...but a really solid line-up and song selection.

highlights:

Spottiswoode's "Times Are A-Changin'"
Jamie Saft Trio's "Ballad of a Thin Man"
Lee Renaldo Project's rockin' "Positively 4th Street"
Warren Haynes "I Shall Be Released"
The Roots awesome mash-up version of "Masters of War" which included the Star Spangled Banner, Taps, and Hendrix's "Machine Gun"!!!
Ryan Adam's medley of "Isis" and "Love Sick" (both were great but together they went on too long)

Sadly the only real lowlight was Ramblin' Jack Elliot's inability to end "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"...Patti Smith had to walk over to him and give him a little nod to get him to pull the plug.
Then the lights just came up and it was over...so it ended the show with no real closure.

And here's the review from Jambands.com...

The music of Bob Dylan took center stage last night at an all-star Bob Dylan Tribute held at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. A benefit for Music for Youth, the multi-band bill featured a breadth of popular performers, who interpreted material from throughout Dylan’s storied career. While Dylan himself did not appear, an image of the Bard’s eyes remained projected above the stage throughout the two-and-a-half hour performance.

Singer/songwriter Bob Moulds opened the evening with a cover of “If Not For You,” before handing over the microphone to Joan Osborne for beautiful rendition of “Make You Feel My Love.” Throughout the night a number of performers also teamed-up unique collaborations: Natalie Merchant and Philip Glass performed a duet on “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” Oliver Wood led Medeski, Martin and Wood through an acoustic take on “Buckets of Rain” (with John Medeski on melodica), Cyndi Lauper backed Jill Sobule on a version of “Ring Them Bells,” and Medeski played organ with Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo on “Positively 4th Street.” Longtime Patti Smith Band multi-instrumentalist Tony Shanahan and Television guitarist Tom Verlaine also made surprise appearances, supporting Patti Smith on “Dark Eyes,” (a number the folk-poet performed on tour with Bob Dylan each night on their 1996 tour). As always, Warren Haynes remained busy, flying back to New York between Gov’t Mule dates to help 18-year old songstress Lauren Shera through “Don't Think Twice, It's Alright,” play guitar with Phil Lesh on Dylan’s brand new “Thunder On The Mountain,” and invite out Kevn Kinney and Joan Osborne for a sing-a-long take on “I Shall Be Released.”

During her spot, Cat Power offered a somewhat awkward version solo version of “House of the Rising Sun” (which Dylan covered on his debut record), while Ryan Adams lived up to his bad boy image, running over his set time and sticking “Love Sick” in the middle of his rock-jam version of “Isis.” Other standout performances included Al Kooper & The Funky Faculty’s version of “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry,” Sandra Bernhard comedy routine based around “Like A Rolling Stone,” Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s rendition of “Love Minus Zero/No Limit,” the Jamie Soft Trio’s instrumental jazz reading of “Ballad Of A Thin Man,” Jay Farrar harmonica-laced “Going, Going, Gone,” Roseanne Cash’s interpretation of “License to Kill,” Allen Toussaint’s solo piano version of “Mama, You've Been On My Mind,” and the Roots powerful take on “Master of War” (the beginning of which was set against the “National Anthem”). The evening closed with an all-star version of “Knockin' On Heaven's Door” featuring Ramblin' Jack Elliot Lauren Shera, Smith and Al Kooper. In total, the evening raised over $100,000 for charity.

Anyone else out there who went and wants to weigh in feel free to leave your review in the comments sections.

On The Road Again

I'll stay away from quoting American Pyscho, but Genesis has announced a reunion tour sans former lead singer Peter Gabriel - who is busy with other projects, but has said he'd maybe open to a reunion down the road.

As of now the band has only announced the European leg of their tour, but the U.S. dates will be coming shortly.

Here's some Genesis for you both the prog-tastic version with Gabriel and the some of the poppy stuff without....

Genesis - 1976-05-01 -Starlight Bowl - Burbank, CA

Genesis - 1977-02-08 - Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis, MN

Genesis -
1986-09-20 - Madison Square Gardens - New York, NY

Genesis - 1992-07-18 - Stade d'Ouest, Nice (France)

And what kind of post would this be if I didn't include the video that probably freaked me out the most as a kid "Land Of Confusion"....

He actually does a pretty good job with it, take a listen....

Say Cheese

As per a statement on their website singer/guitarist Bill Nershi is planning on leaving SCI at the end of next summer to pursue other musical projects. Here's the official announcement....

After summer 2007, Billy Nershi is leaving The String Cheese Incident to pursue other musical projects. There will be only a limited number of Incidents between now and then. Current plans include Thanksgiving in Atlanta, a New Years Eve blowout in San Francisco, Winter Carnival in Colorado, and a return to Red Rocks. Presently, there are no plans for The String Cheese Incident beyond summer of 2007. The band would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends and fans for all your support.

Bluntly put that's it for SCI sorry all you hula-hoopers out there. Unfortunately I'm guessing my last memory of seeing the band will be their lackluster set at Radio City back in July when they opened for Ratdog.

Here's some music from his other project....
